In 2008, many venerable Wall Street institutions lost most of their market value. Traditional buy and hold investors had to endure much of this pain.

Their investments zealously stuck to rules so narrow that there was no room to hide. The managers were not permitted to get out of the way of falling financials. In their zeal for emotionless investing, they also stripped out common sense.

Over the 10 years, from 1999 to 2009, the S&P actually lost money. Investors should not be blamed for being tired of it all. It is just common sense.
